Defining 'late graduate'

For this guide, we define “late graduates” as students who were in eighth grade in 1988, but graduated in July 1992 or later. Since, in almost all school districts, the school year concludes by June, a student receiving a high school diploma in July or later likely needed additional time. Furthermore, this cutoff date is consistent with the graduation rates reported by Cliff Adelman in the highly cited Toolbox Revisited (Adelman 2006).
